Doing the Goodguys AutoCross Boogie

Story by
John Aschenberg

First time I have ever done the autocross. My passenger is Sara Barnard. I had the record after the first trip around, that is the longest/slowest time. I didn't care, I just went out to have fun.

  • If you’ve been to a Goodguys event within the last few years, then you have to know about the AutoCross action that’s been going on at their events. If you haven’t taken the time to go check out the AutoCross, then you need to. It’s exciting to see how these cars and the drivers can maneuver around the course without knocking any cones down or at least keep it to a minimum.

Well this year while at the Goodguys Wix Filters Speedway Nationals inside the Indy Motor Speedway, I was talking to Bret Voelkel with Ridetech and Tony Bicknell with The Roadster Shop on Friday evening. They mentioned that I should try doing the AutoCross. At first I thought, why would I want to take our big 5000 pound big block Impala wagon and run it on the AutoCross. I was told it’s not necessarily all about having the quickest time, but to go out and just have fun. Well, come Saturday morning my wife Julie asked if I was going to do the AutoCross, so we went directly to the AutoCross area to register the wagon and guess what; we had a blast. Once you’ve driven your car or truck on the course, you’re hooked; you just can’t wait to get back out there to try and better your last time. So the next time you’re at a Goodguys show go over to the AutoCross and give it a try, you’ll have a great time I guarantee it.

Second time going out I was stoked and ready. I had two new passengers. Also check out the GoPros that are added on the front and side. You can check out the movies below. The balancing of the weight even helped me around the course. I shaved 12 seconds off my first time.

Third and final time out I ended up with three passengars. Still have my GoPros attached to capture the moment. I knew I wasn't going to break anybodies records, however, I just wanted to have fun. I believe all my riders for the day had fun as well.

  • Our good friend Scott Gillam captured my second run on his phone.
Thank you Scott. Listen very closely to the autocross announcer, Tim Strange, for the event.
Tim also made my first time doing the AutoCross an absolute blast. A Big Thanks to Tim & Carrie Strange.
